At the age of seven, I dreamed of someday walking on the Great Wall of China. At the age of forty-nine, I finally made it. My friend, Ada Mae Lewis, PhD. and I traveled with a group from Iowa State University to 9 cities in China as part of a Friendship Delegation for Iowa's Sister City program.
In 1997 I spent 60 days in Indonesia, touring with a local friend and training to walk a marathon in Anchorage Alaska June 21, 1997 to fund raise for Leukemia. One of our first tourist/exercise stops was at Mt. Bromo in East Java. We got up at 4:00 A.M. to hike 3 miles to get to the site of this extinct, but smoking volcano. I was determined to stand on the rim at sunrise and I did! You can see my joy at the accomplishment. We treked the jungle in Borneo for 3 days, and then rode a bamboo raft for 3 hours downstream to get back to "civilization". We hiked in the mountains of Sulawasi, to see the famed Torajaland houses.snorkled off Gili Island near Lombok, and walked a lot in beautiful Bali where the colorful Hindu religious ceremonies can be seen nearly everyday. Your tourist dollars would help the economy in Indonesia alot so consider it as a wonderful vacation spot.
